Dixie Doc was born Harvey Richard Paul three score and then some years ago in the then-thriving steel town of Braddock, PA, hard by the banks of the Monongahela River, in the shadow of the Homestead Works. At Harvard, he had a life-changing experience, where he and roommate Joel Krauser played host to clarinet great and inveterate alcoholic Pee Wee Russell in their Winthrop House dorm room. Around 1993, Paul had some sort of epiphany, the exact circumstances of which remain vague. H. Richard Paul was no more, replaced by “Dixie Doc”.

Dr. Paul is a well known and respected retired Pediatrician in Pittsburgh, PA formerly practicing with Premier Pedatric Associates and still closely associated with Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Paul is also the founder of the THREE RIVERS DIXIELAND and SWING JAZZ ASSOCIATION, an organization dedicated to the preservation and proliferation of Dixieland and Swing music. The association meets on a monthly basis at the Penn Brewery on the North Side where well known local jazz musicians are brought in to perform.
